Product Overview
Dibasic ester (DBE) is a blended solvent built from dimethyl adipate, dimethyl glutarate and dimethyl succinate. It is the mainstream green replacement solvent for the coatings and printing ink industries, and demand keeps rising as VOC rules tighten and high-odour, hard-to-degrade solvents such as heavy aromatics, isophorone and cyclohexanone come under restriction. DBE answers that pressure with a high boiling point, gentle evaporation, low irritation and natural biodegradability.
It is produced by precision distillation, so total ester content holds at ≥99% with light ends and free acid tightly controlled and consistent batch-to-batch values that will not disturb film formation or resin synthesis. The liquid is clear and bright with a light ester note instead of a harsh odour. Its wide boiling range and even evaporation gradient let it dissolve acrylic, epoxy, polyurethane and nitrocellulose resins, and it stays compatible with alcohols, ketones and aromatics for outstanding blending tolerance. Because it boils higher than low-boiling esters, it extends open time in baking processes and removes pinholes, orange peel and craters, while its biodegradability lowers waste-liquid treatment costs.
Key Advantages
Even, Slow Drying That Prevents Film Defects
A wide boiling range and flat evaporation gradient extend levelling time in baking enamels, coil coatings and wood finishes. The surface does not skin over prematurely, which sharply reduces pinholes, orange peel and bubbles and lifts gloss and adhesion.
Broad Resin Solvency, Wide Formulation Window
Excellent dissolving and dispersing power for epoxy, polyurethane, acrylic, alkyd and nitrocellulose systems. It works as a main solvent or as a high-boiling co-solvent, with high tolerance in let-down and adhesive systems that cuts formulation trial-and-error.
Low Toxicity and Low Odour, Regulation-Ready
Free of aromatics and aggressive ketones, so respiratory irritation on the shop floor stays low and it can be used in food-contact packaging coatings and printing inks. It meets REACH and national VOC emission requirements.
Easy to Distil and Recover, Lower Long-Term Cost
Spent liquid can be recovered by distillation and reused, and it degrades readily in the environment. Waste water and off-gas treatment load is smaller than with high-aromatic solvents, so long-term environmental spend falls noticeably.
Applications
DBE is used across industrial baking coatings, printing and metal-decorating inks, adhesives and resin synthesis.
- Industrial baking coatings — a dedicated high-boiling co-solvent for coil steel coatings, automotive bake enamels, insulating varnishes and wood baking topcoats that improves film levelling, flexibility and weather resistance.
- Printing and metal-decorating inks — a slow-drying aid for gravure, screen and metal-decorating inks that keeps pigment dispersion stable and runs at high press speed without blocking the plate or stringing, with gloss that holds and does not blush.
- Adhesives — a let-down solvent for polyurethane and epoxy laminating adhesives and leather adhesives that adjusts open time and cures to a clear bond line, suited to film and panel lamination.
- Precision industrial cleaning — the solvency base for paint removers, electronics flux cleaners and mould resin/oil degreasers that strips cured paint and oil without leaving residue.
