Product Overview
Dipropylene glycol methyl ether — also called DPM or (2-methoxymethylethoxy)propanol — is made by condensing propylene oxide with methanol and then removing monopropylene ether and light impurities through multi-stage vacuum rectification, giving a balanced isomer ratio and tightly controlled water content and colour. Its molecule carries both a hydrophilic hydroxyl group and a lipophilic ether bond, so it is compatible with water, resins and oils in both directions, and it evaporates very slowly. As a film-forming aid it sharply lowers the minimum film-formation temperature of coatings, and sprayed films show no blushing or pinholes. Its high flash point and very low ambient vapour pressure make it far safer on the shop floor than short-chain glycol ethers.
Industry-wide, low-VOC waterborne coating policy is being rolled out globally and traditional glycol ethers are increasingly restricted, so demand for DPM as an eco-friendly replacement solvent keeps growing. Expanding semiconductor and new-energy electronics manufacturing is driving firm demand for photoresists and precision cleaning, while personal care and waterborne agrochemical applications continue to add steady volume.
Key Advantages
Strong Two-Way Water/Oil Coupling for Fully Waterborne Systems
Its unique amphiphilic structure means waterborne coatings need no extra co-solvent. It prevents resin separation and settling and greatly improves the storage stability of the system.
Ultra-Low Volatility and Slow Drying for Full, Flawless Films
A high boiling point and very low vapour pressure give a wide film-formation window, so films form completely even at low temperature with less cracking, blushing and cratering.
High Flash Point and Low Vapour Pressure for Safer Plant Operation
A 75 °C flash point means flammable vapour does not readily accumulate at ambient temperature, so explosion-proof equipment investment is lower and shop-floor risk is well below short-chain ethers such as PM and CAC.
Low Toxicity and Regulatory Compliance, Replacing Restricted Glycol Ethers
No reproductive toxicity risk, compliant with REACH and workshop VOC controls, and a high pass rate in testing for exported coatings and personal care products.
Applications
Dipropylene glycol methyl ether serves six differentiated industrial sectors: waterborne industrial baking coatings, high-end packaging inks, electronic photoresists, precision industrial cleaning, personal care fragrance and waterborne agrochemical formulations.
- Waterborne industrial baking coatings — a dedicated film-forming and coupling agent for architectural latex paints, waterborne wood coatings and eco-friendly metal topcoats; it lowers the film-formation temperature and improves film scrub resistance.
- High-end packaging inks — a slow-drying solvent for waterborne gravure and offset inks on food flexible packaging; pigments disperse evenly and there is no screen blocking at high press speeds.
- Electronic photoresists — a dilution and stripping medium for PCB and semiconductor photoresists; it evaporates without residue and does not corrode precision substrates.
- Precision industrial cleaning — an oil and grease cleaner for optical lenses, lithium-battery components and plastic fixtures; cleaned parts show no water marks or ionic residue.
