Product Overview
Ethylene glycol monoethyl ether — also called 2-ethoxyethanol, ethylene glycol ethyl ether or EGEE — is a mainstream glycol ether coupling solvent. It is made by catalytic addition of ethylene oxide to ethanol followed by multi-stage continuous distillation. Purity holds at ≥99% with trace free alcohol, water and aldehyde strictly controlled and almost no batch-to-batch variation, so it will not disturb coating film formation or electronics process cleanliness.
The molecule carries both a hydrophilic hydroxyl group and a lipophilic ether bond, so it is miscible in any ratio with water, aromatics, esters and ketones and can bridge waterborne and solventborne formulation systems — a widely used compatibility additive for formulators. Its moderate boiling point and gentle evaporation leave ample open time during film formation, improving levelling and reducing shrinkage cavities and fish eyes, while its balanced solvency for resins, dyes, oils and inorganic salts covers dilution, extraction and emulsification duties. With high-solids coatings, precision electronics and textile dyeing all expanding, demand for glycol ethers that combine coupling and slow drying keeps rising.
Key Advantages
Water and Oil Compatibility for Maximum Formulation Freedom
Its unique dual-affinity molecule dissolves oil-based resins and pigments and is miscible with water in any ratio, acting as a coupling agent to solve oil-water separation and cutting the cost of blending and trialling multiple solvents.
Outstanding Slow Drying and Levelling
A gentle evaporation rate extends the levelling window in baking and air-drying systems, giving a flat, glossy film free of shrinkage cavities, fish eyes and pinholes — ideal for premium topcoats and metal baking enamels.
Low Residue and High Cleanliness for Precision Electronics
Strong solvency for inks, solder paste and oil contamination, with no ionic residue after cleaning. It does not corrode PCBs or plastic components and meets high-cleanliness electronics workshop standards.
One Material, Several Duties
It works as a diluent, extraction solvent and emulsion stabiliser, so the same grade is used across coating, leather, agrochemical and pharmaceutical lines, reducing raw material SKUs and warehouse space.
Applications
Ethylene glycol monoethyl ether is used across industrial baking coatings, printing inks, precision electronics cleaning and pharmaceutical extraction.
- Industrial baking coatings — a dedicated slow-drying diluent for automotive topcoats, coil coatings and epoxy insulating varnishes that tunes the evaporation gradient and improves film gloss, flexibility and weather resistance.
- Printing inks — a co-solvent for plastic and metal gravure and screen inks that improves pigment dispersion and runs at high speed without blocking the screen or producing blushing and colour drag.
- Precision electronics cleaning — a cleaner for flux residue on PCB boards, electronic components and solder stencils that leaves no residue and does not corrode the substrate.
- Textile and leather processing — a leather dyeing penetrant and textile dye emulsion stabiliser that improves dyeing uniformity for fuller, more even colour.
