Product Overview
sec-Butyl acetate — also called 1-methylpropyl acetate or acetic acid sec-butyl ester — is produced by an environmentally friendly butene addition route and refined by continuous distillation to a stable purity of ≥99.5%, with water, free acid and heavy-end impurities tightly controlled. It is a colourless, transparent liquid with a soft, sweet fruity note and an evaporation rate between ethyl acetate and n-butyl acetate, giving controllable, even drying.
It is slightly soluble in water and infinitely miscible with alcohols, ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons and petroleum solvents, with excellent solvency for acrylic, nitrocellulose, polyurethane and chlorinated rubber resins. It can replace toluene, xylene and MIBK with a friendlier VOC profile, and its moderate boiling point keeps distillation recovery economical. UN and HS codes are indicative and are confirmed before each shipment.
Key Advantages
Balanced Evaporation That Suits High-Speed Lines
Drying speed sits between ethyl acetate and n-butyl acetate, combining good levelling with production efficiency. It resists screen blocking and blushing in spraying and printing, reducing rejects on high-speed lines and lifting daily output.
Strong Solvency That Replaces Aromatic Solvents
Outstanding solvency for resins, pigments and oils allows direct substitution for xylene and MIBK, lowering solvent irritation in the workshop while helping you meet VOC control requirements.
Low-Odour, Gentle Fruity Profile
No sharp aromatic smell, so enclosed coating and printing plants see less respiratory irritation during long shifts — well suited to food-packaging inks and indoor coating production.
Easy Recovery and Lower Production Cost
The moderate boiling point means distillation recovery takes less energy and waste liquid can be recycled at a high rate, significantly reducing solvent purchasing spend over time. Direct factory supply comes with complete export documentation — MSDS, COA, dangerous goods packaging certificate and commodity inspection documents — plus one-stop logistics support for import customs clearance.
Applications
sec-Butyl acetate is used across industrial coatings, printing inks, laminating adhesives, precision industrial cleaning, and pharmaceutical and fragrance applications.
- Industrial coatings — a dedicated thinner for wood lacquers, automotive refinish paints, coil coatings and nitrocellulose topcoats. It balances film drying speed and improves gloss and levelling, making it a workhorse solvent for low-aromatic, low-VOC formulations.
- Printing inks — a reducing solvent for high-speed plastic-film flexo and gravure inks and for screen inks, resisting plate sticking and set-off at high press speeds and keeping print work sharp and bright.
- Laminating adhesives — a diluent for film laminating adhesives, footwear adhesives, pressure-sensitive adhesives and polyurethane sealants, adjusting open time and improving coating uniformity and bond strength.
- Precision industrial cleaning — a fast-drying cleaner for oil and adhesive residue on metal stampings, plastic housings and printing screens. It leaves no water marks and can be recovered by distillation for reuse.

| Hazard Classification | Class 3 flammable liquid |
| Stability | Stable at ambient temperature with moderate chemical activity; does not decompose readily when containers are kept sealed |
| Solubility | Slightly soluble in water; miscible with ethanol, ether and most other organic solvents |
| Storage | Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse away from ignition sources and heat. Warehouse temperature should not exceed 37 °C and containers must stay sealed. Store separately from strong oxidisers, strong alkalis and strong acids — never mixed. Use explosion-proof lighting and ventilation, and do not use equipment or tools that can produce sparks. The storage area must hold spill-response equipment and suitable containment material. |
